即使是久經考場的雅思考生，也會在口語考場上遇到一些措手不及的問題或題目中聽不懂的單詞。在這種情況下，考生一定要掌握一些靈活的技能，才能應對自如，抓住機會充分展現自己的英文能力。
首先，如果遇到聽不懂的單詞如何處理：
例如考官提問：
      “——Computer technology plays a big role in children's education today. Do you think the benefits of using computer are overrated?”
      “電腦技術在當今的兒童教育中扮演着重要的角色。你認為使用電腦的好處是否被高估了(overrated)？”
如果 “overrated”這個詞語對考生來講是生僻的單詞，考生的本能反應會是：
      Inappropriate response: 
      “---Overrated?”
      “---What's overrated?”
      “---Can you say it again?”
      或者考生會聯想到中學課本課文中的對話內容，在沒有聽清楚地情況下，要回應
      “---I beg your pardon.”
      上述的應答方式都不是考場的明智之舉。在生活中有多少情況下會用書本上的語言來回應現實生活中的問題呢？其實，考生們在進入考場之前，應該靜下心，來熟悉記憶一些適當的習語性的表達方式“Idiomatic Expression”，用以應對各種現實對話中的情景。如果有聽不懂的單詞，考生是可以嘗試澄清問題，給自己闖出展開回答問題的機會。適當的表達方式包括：
      Appropriate response: 
      “---What do you mean by overrated?”
      “---Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean by overrated.”
      “---Would you mind explaining what over rated means? ”
      “---would you please rephrase overrated?”
      或者考生們可以嘗試以用適當的習語性表達方式猜測單詞的含義，例如：
      Make assumption:
      “---Are you saying that the benefits of computer use might not be that good?”
      這時你會發現考官一定會對你說：
      “---Yes, that's right.”
      雅思口語考試就是為了考核考生是否具備在以英文為母語的國家的生活和學習能力。只要考生能夠在考場上展現其應答能力具備是符合英文習慣用語的表達方式，那麼就一定能夠得到理想的分數。
