Just (adv.僅僅) about half of the sixth formers (n.中六學生) who passed (v.及格) Hong Kong(n.香港)'s first Diploma (n.文憑) of Secondary Education (n.中學) exam are sure of a local (adj.本地的) university (n.大學) place.
      And the others face the prospect (n.前景) of studying abroad (adv.在外國) or in the mainland (n.內地).
      This emerged (v.露出真相) yesterday after the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment (n.評核) Authority (n.局) announced (v.公布) that 26,431 students - or 37.7 percent (n.百分數) of 73,074 candidates (n.考生) who sat (v.參加考試) the exams - met (v.符合) requirements (n.要求) for four-year subsidized (adj.資助的) university programs (n.課程).
      Results will be handed out (v.派發) today.
      But just 15,150 places at the eight publicly (adv.由政府) funded (v.資助) universities are available (adj.可獲得的) for the candidates who passed.
      The new education reforms (n.改制) will see six years of secondary school and four years of university.
      Examinations authority secretary-general (n.秘書長) Tong Chong-sze (n.唐創時) said the exams outcome (n.結果、成績) was satisfactory.
      Tong said: "There are 4,000 to 5,000 places available at local private (adj.私立的) universities and 63 mainland universities have enrolled (v.招收) 3,000 students."
      Five students got the highest possible grade (n.成績) of 5** in seven subjects (n.科目) and 83 students 5** in five or more subjects.

      在香港首屆中學文憑試中取得及格成績的中六學生，僅僅大約半數肯定可以取得香港大學的學額。
      其他同學面對的前景，則是在外國或內地升學。
      香港考試及評核局昨天透露上述資料。考評局公布，參加這個考試的七萬三千零七十四名學生中，有二萬六千四百三十一人符合四年制資助大學課程的要求，佔百分之三十七點七。
      成績將於今天派發。
      然而八所由政府資助的大學，只有一萬五千一百五十個學額可分配給及格考生。
      根據新學制，中學將會有六年，而大學將會有四年。
      考評局秘書長唐創時表示，考試成績令人滿意。
      唐創時說：“香港私立大學有四五千個學額，而六十三所內地大學共招收三千名學生。”
      五名學生取得最佳成績，即七個科目都得5**；此外，有八十三名學生取得至少五科5**。
