The world has become more peaceful (adj.和平的) for the first time since 2009 according to the annual (adj.一年一度的) Global (adj.全球的) Peace (n.和平) Index (n.指數) (GPI) released (v.公布) today.
      Published by the Institute (n.研究所) for Economics & Peace, the index tries to measure peacefulness (n.和平程度). This year has seen the world become 'slightly (adv.稍微地) more peaceful' - bucking (v.抵住) the trend (n.趨勢) seen in the last two years where the ranking (n.排名) showed a decline (n.下降) in global peace.
      Iceland (n.冰島) is once again ranked (v.排行) the most peaceful country in the world, followed by Denmark (n.丹麥) and New Zealand (n.新西蘭). Syria (n.敘利亞) has seen the biggest drop (n.下跌) in margin (n.幅度),       falling over 30 places (n.位置) to be placed at 147th.
      Somalia (n.索馬里) is the least peaceful country at 158th position. Afghanistan (n.阿富汗), Sudan (n.蘇丹), Iraq (n.伊拉克) and the Democratic (adj.民主的) Republic (n.共和國) of Congo (n.剛果) make up the bottom five.
      Now in it's sixth year, the GPI is made up of 23 indicators (n.指標) and ranks 158 countries. It gages (v.評核) the level of safety and security (n.平靜) in society and also looks at the extent (n.程度) of domestic (adj.國內的) or international conflict (n.衝突).
      Taiwan (n.台灣) ranks 27, while the United States (n.美國) and China (中國) ranks 88 and 89 respectively (adv.依次地).

      一年一度的全球和平指數（GPI）今天公布。根據這份報告，世界自二○○九年以來首次變得更和平。
　　這項指數由經濟與和平研究所出版，目的是量度和平的程度。今年，世界變得“稍微更和平”——逆轉了過去兩年這個排名顯示全球和平程度正在下降的趨勢。
      冰島再度蟬聯世界最和平國家，緊隨其後的是丹麥和新西蘭。敘利亞的跌幅最大，下跌三十余位，排行第一百四十七。
      索馬里最不和平，排名一百五十八。排行榜末五位的尚有阿富汗、蘇丹、伊拉克、剛果民主共和國。
      全球和平指數今次是第六年公布，採用二十三個指標量度，把一百五十八個國家排名。它除了評核社會的安全與平靜的水平外，並查看國內與國際衝突有多嚴重。
      台灣排名二十七，而美國和中國則分別排名八十八和八十九。
