When you first arrive in Canada, there will be many things you want to know quickly. If you do not have a friend to turn to for help, you will be surprised how useful your telephone directory can be. There you can find telephone numbers of both local and federal government offices in the blue section. In addition, you will also find information relating to community resources, such as services for non-English speaking immigrants, daycare facilities, counselling resources, churches and voluntary agencies.
      Another type of telephone directory, which is very popular in Canada, is the Yellow Pages. This is a book of yellow pages, which display advertisements and classify all types of businesses and services found in the local telephone directory. Its way of listing telephone entries makes it easy for users to locate a specific service or business.
      A third source of information is the classified ad section of your local newspaper. If you are not familiar with its classification system, turn to the first page of the “classified ads” and look for the classification index. It covers a broad range of categories, including announcements, job opportunities, professional services, real estate, merchandise for sale and many other headings.
