Canadians have a wide variety of choices in selecting accommodation. Among these choices are single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhouses, apartments and condominiums, which are described below.
■Single-family houses are detached houses built for single families. They vary in size from a modest one-storey bungalow to a luxurious, two-storey mansion.
■Duplexes are two dwellings occupying a common lot and sharing a common central wall.
■ Townhouses (sometimes called row houses) are built in a row and are separated by common walls. Each unit has its own entrance and often a small yard.
■Apartments are multiple dwelling units within a building. They are maintained and serviced by an apartment manager. They vary in size from a small studio apartment to a spacious penthouse.
■ Condominiums. These are self-owned units within a dwelling complex. Land and common facilities are jointly owned.
