Shanghai bids farewell to the Expo
( 2010-11-19 )

The 2010 Shanghai (n.上海) World Expo (n.博覽會) ended last night in a blaze (n.展現) of fireworks (n.煙花), festivities (n.歡樂) and parades (n.巡遊), solidifying (v.鞏固) China(n.中國)'s mark on the event while also leaving lessons (n.經驗) to be learned for the next host (n.
Premier (n.總理) Wen Jiabao (n.溫家寶) said Sunday that "The success of the Expo has strengthened (v.加強) China's confidence and resolve (n.決心) to pursue (v.追求) reform and opening-up (n. China will unswervingly (adv.堅定不移地) follow the path of peaceful development and stay open and inclusive (adj.
China said the six-month culture and technology event, with a theme (n.主題) of "Better City, Better Life" (n.“城市,讓生活更美好”), drew (v.吸引) nearly 73 million visitors from about 190 countries, surpassing (v.超越) the previous record of 64 million visitors at the 1970 Osaka (n.大阪) World Expo in Japan (n.日本).
However, the event was not without its problems.
During the course of the event, complaints (n.投訴) mounted (v.逐漸增加) as visitors had to wait in line for many hours for popular pavilions (n.展館), often in the blazing (adj.酷熱的) summer heat.
The Chinese Pavilion will remain open for half a year.
