There is no place for God (n.上帝) in theories on the creation (n.創造) of the Universe (n.宇宙), Professor (n.教授) Stephen Hawking (n.霍金) has said.
      In a new book, Britain(n.英國)'s most famous physicist (n.物理學家) sets out (v.懷目標去做) to contest (v.質疑) Sir (n.爵士) Isaac Newton(n.牛頓)'s belief that the universe must have been designed (v.設計) by God as it could not have sprung (v.突然出現) out of chaos (n.渾沌).
      The Grand (adj.偉大的) Design says there is no need to invoke (v.提出) God to set the Universe going.
      Citing (v.引述) the 1992 discovery of a planet (n.行星) orbiting (v.圍繞……運行) a star (n.恆星) other than our Sun (n.太陽), Hawking said: "That makes the coincidences (n.巧合) of our planetary (adj.行星的) conditions - the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth(n.地球)-Sun distance and solar (adj.太陽的) mass (n.質量) - far less remarkable (adj.非凡的), and far less compelling (adj.令人信服的) as evidence (n.證據) that the Earth was carefully designed just to please (v.取悅) us human beings."
      He adds: "Because there is a law such as gravity (n.重力), the universe can and will create itself from nothing.
      "Spontaneous (adj.自發的) creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist."

      霍金教授認為，在宇宙創造理論中，上帝沒有佔一席位。
      在一本新書中，這位英國最著名物理學家提出理據質疑牛頓爵士的理論。牛頓相信，宇宙不可能自一片渾沌中突然出現，因而必須由上帝設計。
      《偉大的設計》卻指出，令宇宙啟動，毋須提出“上帝”這一觀念。
      霍金引述1992年天文學家發現一顆行星圍繞我們太陽以外一顆恆星運行時說：“這令我們的行星巧合狀況——單一的太陽，以及地日距離和太陽質量的幸運配合——遠不如想像般非凡；以此來證明地球是為了取悅我們人類而精心設計的話，也遠不如想像般令人信服。”
      他續說：“由於有諸如重力的定律，宇宙可以並將會從虛無中自我創造。“‘自發創造’解釋了為何這個世界是有而不是無，為何宇宙存在，為何我們存在。”
