( 2010-05-21 )

      在英文裏,你經常見到一個動詞後面有另一個動詞,例如以下句子:
      (1) She wants to watch TV.
      她想看電視。
      (2) She enjoys watching TV.
      她喜歡看電視。
In the first sentence, the to-infinitive (to watch) is used. In the other sentence, the -ing form (watching) is used. To decide whether to use the infinitive or the -ing form, we have to look at the first verb in the sentence. Want should be followed by the infinitive, and enjoy should be followed by the -ing form.
      第一句用不定式 to-watch,另一句則用 -ing式watching。用不定式還是 -ing,決定於句子的第一個動詞。Want 後面要用不定式,而enjoy後面要用 -ing式。
The following are verbs which should be followed by the infinitive:
      以下動詞後面要用不定式:

      fail   hope  learn manage  plan
      pretend promise refuse wish
The next group of verbs should be followed by -ing:
      以下動詞後面要用-ing式:
      avoid consider  deny  dislike
finish give up  can't help enjoy
mind practice  suggest  look forward to
