Need may be used in a special way in questions and negative sentences. Study how the the verb is used in the following sentences:

      Need he come？（他需要來嗎？）
      He needn't come. （他不需要求。）
      Note: need not is often shortened to needn't.
      （註：need not 通常寫成 needn't。）

      There are several things to learn from the above examples. First, need is followed by an infinitive without to, e.g. You needn't worry. Second, there is no s after need, even though the subject is in the third person singular, e.g. He need not stay. Third, need is normally used in this way in questions or negative sentences.

      The sentences Need he come? and He needn't come can be re-written as follows:

      The important thing is not to mix up these two ways of using need. （最重要是不要將 need 這兩種用法混淆。）
